City Tour: More of Plaza de Mayo, La Boca and Puerto Madero

We had a 3 hour city tour organized by the program which took us around the main parts of BA and started out in Plaza de Mayo

Casa Rosada - where the president works. Famous for the balcony on the right from which Evita would make speeches. It is pink because they used limestone mixed with cow blood to prevent it from falling apart from the humidity which gets pretty bad in the summer apparently

One building on the edge of the plaza - an ex of French architecture through out the city.  Apparently Argentines really looked up to the French and saw their culture as very chic. Ironically, the signature roof of the building is to prevent snow from getting stuck up there which isn't useful in Argentina.
The Boca Jrs stadium. Notice the Cocal-Cola ads are black and white, not their ussual red and white. This is because red and white are the colors of the rival team River Plate. The Boca Jrs asked Coca-Cola to change the color for this particular stadium.

La Boca - the postcard image of BA, with its multi-colored buildings and people dancing tango in the streets

The area is extremely touristy now but actually began as the immigrant neighborhood of BA. This accounts for the multi-colored buildings; the immigrants didn't have enough money to buy paint so used whatever they had and thus established the famous facade.

Tango in La Boca
Puerto Madero - described as the new "yuppy" neighborhood of BA. Historically, the  port but the architect who won the competition to design it - Madero did a poor job and many boats could not fit through. It is now a primarily residential area with limited public transportation, lots of restaurants, cafes etc.
The new, international work area adjacent to Puerto Madero - mostly technology companies. Very modern.
Cranes are all over Puerto Madero to remind residents of the area's history of being a warehouse site
